round robin 2020

My round robin group in 2020, had 4 people.  

This is the first block I received.  I wasn't sure what to add to it, which colors to pull out from the star!

I chose the black and white border to make it a little larger, then pinwheels in teals.  I thought there was a lot of mustard in the star already, the teal would help make it pop.

This is the second block I received.  I liked the straight lines contrasting the triangles and diamonds.

I noticed in the second round it didn't have any of the blue, so I added that.  I went completely different for this.  I did a kite block.  I like the movement it adds.

 

This is the last block I received.  I love the framing on the house, and then the squares on point around it.  I picked out the colors I wanted to use, but had no clue about what to do.

 

Then it came to me, flying geese! If I wouldn't have been so in love with the fabrics I picked out, I probably would have made them all green, and to look like trees. I think they kind of look like they are flying around the house. 

And last but not least, my lovely cat quilt block that came back to me!  I actually got this block when I was doing the monthly block swap.

I LOVE the borders!! I cannot wait to add some more to mine to make it a full size quilt!

 

 

Pokémon quilt

Well I shared the pictures of a few pieces of the quilt cut out and on my design wall, here are some more pictures:

Here are a few more rounds that I had sewn and laid out on the design wall.

Another picture on the design wall, with a few more rounds and I have started sewing the quilt together.

This was the last time I could fit it on the design wall.  It was getting a little heavy to fit up there!

This quilt really only took my one day of sewing.  It went together SO fast.  I think the hardest part was cutting out some of the longer strips.  I really liked this pattern and could see myself using it again!

Pinks & Purples quilt top done!

Here is a link to the posts I have done about this quilt.  I started this quilt in Spring 2019. I made the quilt, but knew I wanted to add a border.  So I created the pieced border, EXCEPT when I went to attach it, it did not go so well.

The pink zig zags didn't match up! So I had to take it apart, then figure out how to get it to work  I did get it to work, and I am QUITE happy with it! I will get full measurements once I get it quilted.  

I am working on the backing now, it's going to be pieced.  I am going through my fabric and trying to use up what I have.
 

Border - pinks and purples quilt

For my pinks & purples quilt I wanted to make a border.  Here is the original post about the border. It was going real well.  Until I went to put it on the quilt.  The corners looked funny.  So even though I had put two borders on, I had to take them off to do some adjustments.

I needed to add a few blocks and change the way the corner block looked. I am happy with how it turned out.  But not happy with how long it took!

Minnie was my helper while I was working on this!  Making sure I didn't mess anything up!
 

Ray Quilt along

I found this on instagram.  It's a quilt by Carolyn friedlander, called Ray.  And she is doing a quilt a long, I am a little behind, but I will say it goes together, VERY quickly! 

I got quite a bit done last night! I am hoping by later today I will have a finished top!

I am not going to call this a Ray quilt, but I am going to call it a pokémon quilt, I picked the colors I did because they are the colors of a pokéball.

Binding

I showed the time lapse video of my long arm, but I also like to get a shot of the quilt on the machine (especially when it's a big quilt and I can't get a full picture on my own).

I chose to use a grey thread for the quilting and a grey fabric for the binding.

tee shirt quilt 3

The shirts my sister gave me, there were some that had small squares on them the fronts and a few that had designs on the sleeves.  So rather than sew them together to make blocks, I used them as a row, a really skinny row.

I love how this quilt is coming together!

 I finished cutting and trimming all the tee shirts and have it put up on my design wall! 

It's quite big!! It fills up almost all of my design wall (top to bottom!)

My youngest sister asked me if I would make a tee shirt quilt for her, so of course I said yes!  The first part seems to take the longest, cutting the shirts apart and ironing on the interfacing.

I have started cutting them apart and putting them up on my design wall.

Quarantine Quilt 2

During Quarantine because of everything with school and such, I wanted something easy to work on.  This is my second quarantine quilt. 

I wanted to work on something fairly easy, and sewing all those 16 patches definitely fit that!

Spool blocks

I haven't taken a picture of my spool blocks in a while.

I currently have 295 blocks! I don't have enough room on my design wall once I make some more ;)

If this keeps up, this quilt is going to be massive! It's so crazy, but full of so many fabrics.  Things I have had used in other quilts, and fabrics that just needed to be cut up.

I am not sure how big I shall make this quilt.  I might go to 30 blocks.

15 blocks.  School can be difficult, finding things for my students to do, doing the grading, checking up on students.  

I can imagine how tough things are for them, because they are difficult for me.  

I am glad I have this hobby to help keep me sane.  I just would like to finish other things.  But I need something that doesn't require thinking.

These blocks really are coming together so quickly. I am running out of variety of blocks.  For each individual block I am using different fabrics. I am not caring about color, light or dark. 

I have been trying to go through my scraps, using things up or cutting it down.  I want to have things more organized, so it's easier to quilt.

I am up to 12 blocks!

Quarantine Quilt

These blocks are coming along SO fast.  It takes a few seams to put together, but they go together quite quickly.  I already have 6 blocks! I am not sure how many blocks I will make the quilt.

The blocks finish at 12".  So it won't take much to make this a large quilt.  This is definitely helping me through this quarantine time.  I want to sew, but I seem to have lost some mojo, so these are easy to do.

a new quilt?

I finished 4 quilts, so that means I need to start another one right?!

I don't know where I saw a picture of a quilt like this, probably facebook (there's so many nice quilting groups there!)  But I decided to draw it out to see how each block was put together.

I drew it out in September 2019! So over 6 months ago.  I did the math and could use two sizes of blocks, just dependent on what size strips I wanted to cut up.  2.5" x 4.5" or 2" x 3.5"

The 2.5" x 4.5" are the same size blocks that my rail fence quilt uses! So I already had some started!

These came together SO fast.  For my leader ender I have been using, the mini spools, I ran out of backing fabric (ok I can't find it, I have more, I am just not sure WHERE). So I used this as my leaders and enders.  The blocks came together SO quickly!  I love that there aren't seams to match!

I think I am going to call this Quarantine Quilt, because things being the way they are, it's very mindless sewing.

Tee Shirt Quilt 3

Here is the next row.  I added slightly wider sashing between the blocks so they they would be approximately the same height as the first two rows.

I got real excited because there were some thinner blocks here, and you could really see them "floating" with the shadow!

And here are all 4 rows done.  

I also had some smaller blocks that I originally was going to intersperse throughout the quilt, but decided it would add too much length.

So then I had thought about adding them as a row by themselves, but then I was afraid it would make them the quilt too wide and not long enough.  I think what I might do is add them to the top or bottom.

Since my blocks weren't all the same size it took some work to add them to each other.  I started with the row that I thought would have the largest blocks and be the longest. 

I made the blocks that were the smallest and added sashing to the sides so that they were all the same width.  Then I added a small sashing 1.5" to each block.

Then I did the same thing to the next longest block, changing the size of the sashing to try to make sure that it was the same length as the first row, again, having the design wall was SO helpful.

Tee shit Quilt 1

  So I have started another tee-shirt quilt.  This one is for my father in law.  He used to help out at a Drama Camp each summer, so most of these shirts are from that.

I decided I would try a new to me technique, and make a shadow on each block.  I have seen it done, but not tried it yet.  I chose to use strips that were 1.5".  The only "struggle" I really had is that most of the blocks were different sizes, so I had to do a lot of measuring to make sure the black was the right size. 

Next time all the blocks will be the same width & length. 

I LOVE my design wall.  And it helped me so much when making this quilt.  I was able to put the blocks up as I worked on them, but also be able to rearrange them so they were in a design pattern that I liked.
